The Walsh County Historical  Society has a museum in Minto North Dakota.  The museum was gifted a piece of the superstructure of the USS Arizona and dedicated it on Sunday June 30.  It was a very nice ceremony on a very nice day and I was proud to be a part of it.  I asked our Director of Chaplaincy for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod to help and he sent a very nice letter and a “challenge coin” for the commemoration.  There are many twists and turns to the story of how the museum got the artifact and I am sure that will be part of the display.  I was happy to particiate.  Commemorations like these are a big deal and we need to have a revitalization of our history and the sacrifices that so many made to give us a future.

So blessings on the Historical Society and their work and God bless our Service men and women around the world as they protect and defend.  As we count down to the 4th of July this prayer for the dedication is meet right and salutary.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

We gather today in remembrance of an infamous day and the courageous resolve of those who stood and fought for our nation’s cherished ideals.

We dedicate this piece of history that reminds us of the attack on Pearl Harbor, we honor the memories of the more than 2,400 Americans who died, the more than 1,100 wounded, and the countless others who stood in our defense. Today, we remember their sacrifice for the cause of freedom, and ask for Your grace and guidance as our nation joins others facing foes against liberty.

May we have the character and courage of our Pearl Harbor forbearers to support and defend the basic human rights and dignities which You have endowed in all of Your children.

Finally, God, may humanity live in security and confidence, as written by Your Prophet Isaiah, when “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” Guide and direct us in all that we do so we may bring glory and honor to You by bringing peace on Earth and goodwill toward all beings through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Heavenly Father, God of all concord, it is Your gracious will that Your children on earth live together in harmony and peace. Defeat the plans of all those who would stir up violence and strife, destroy the weapons of those who delight in war and bloodshed.

In Jesus Name We Pray

Amen
