What Is In a Name?

IMG_1425When John the Baptist was in prison he sent his disciples to see if Jesus was the one they had been waiting for or if they should wait for someone else.  Jesus answered, ““Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.” Jesus reiterated the prophetic message that the coming of the Messiah would be a time of care for the poor and needy as well as a time for the preaching of God’s love and forgiveness for sinners.  It would be the whole package.

What ‘s in a name?  LCMS World Relief and Human Care showed the whole package.  We had a wonderful brand and we actually did what the bylaws of our Board said we should do and that was to express God’s love by caring for humans.  It seems like a novel idea to some theologians and even some of our lay people.

One of the ways we tried to express what we were about was through branding and images.  This picture according to some people who should now may have been one of the greatest examples of a “brand” that anyone had seen in a long time.

Divine love – Human Care was a great image.  It says it all.  Because of God’s love we care for humans.  Because of Divine Love we can care for other humans.  A CEO of a Lutheran Social Service Agency told me this poster was the greatest image he had every seen to help people see why mercy agencies do what they do.  The large image of Jesus is composed of many smaller pictures of human beings.  Some are in need and some are helping.  It was and is impressive.

The LCMS underwent restructuring.  All the Boards were placed under two Boards.  There was a definite reason for it and someday I will explain what I think it was.  My concern is that our emphasis upon Mercy has been put onto the back burner.  Our mercy workers and missionaries are great and they are compassionate folk who need and deserve our support and prayer.  But mercy and compassion as a corporate act by the church at every level is a Divine imperative, and it needs to be in the same sentence as the preaching of the Gospel.

Divine Love – Human Care.  That says it all.

What is the church for? continued

This picture will always haunt me of a mother looking for work in the oil patch and having to live in her car with her little baby.  She is not poor or destitute, but she needs a place to stay and someone to help with the care of the child while she works.  Yet many do not think that is the churches job.

Micah 6 says, ”

He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth God require of thee, but to do justly, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God?

We might also add to walk humbly with our fellow human beings in need and difficulty. If the love of Christ will jot compel us I guess I am at a loss as to what will.  Please read the following link and remember that this service provided by the Pastor and the church has been brought to an end by an amalgamation of people that really don’t know what to do, and my guess is, don’t care.  There are a lot of rules out there and seemingly very few answers.

“Mercy” – What’s in a Word? Part two.

This is the kind of mess that "mercy teams" cleaning up in Minot are confronting. One group just sent me an email and said they had a "great time".

 

We started this blog to show the connections we have together in the North Country and how we can partner and do “mercy” together.  It’s fun to see the connections and find out all the ways that we are working together already as well as explore new ways.  Last week I mentioned that folks from Chisolm MN drove all the way across Minnesota and much of North Dakota to go muck out houses in  Minot.  I just heard of a group that went from Niagara, North Dakota and this morning I received a note from Pastor Drevlow in Breckinridge MN that he went over with 8 youth and 2 adults from Grace Lutheran.  Now I would say in our life together, these folks undertook a “mission of mercy”.  Can I say that Grace Lutheran Church in Breckinridge was “doing” mercy?

I have been thinking a lot about Prof Herrmann’s article in the Concordia Theological Journal – see December 7 blog.  He said in part –

When God is described as “merciful” it is a beautiful thing. Yet what happens when we use the term “mercy” to describe our actions towards our neighbor, or the churches orientation to the world? Are we to picture the Christian as one who is accustomed to a position of privilege? Is the church comprised of those who have the upper hand and thus from that place of luxury to be gracious and merciful to a disadvantaged world? Interestingly, Paul writes that God did not choose the privileged – the rich, the wise, and the powerful – but the weak, the poor, and the foolish. So is “mercy” the right word?

This has brought back a lot of memories. The question of whether or not an institution can practice “mercy” was one that was raised early on in our relationship with a LCMS World Relief and Human Care. Discussion on the board centered around the fact that as most of us had been educated in LCMS schools and were never taught that the church had a corporate or institutional life of Mercy. We were taught that the function of the church was to preach the gospel and administer the sacraments and that individual Christians in their own vocations practiced mercy. This was no ivory tower speculation either, but very practical down-to-earth discussions as we studied our bylaws and who we were supposed to be is the Board for World Relief and Human Care.  We were called in various places “the mercy arm of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod”.  Our bylaws were full of verbs, action words that told us we needed to “do” something and yet our question was what is it exactly an organization can “do”? We spent a lot of time discussing the idea that if our job was simply to raise money from the good people of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and send that money off to somebody else to “do” something, we might as well shut the shop down and refer everyone to the Red Cross. It was this conversation that led us to discuss as a Board a theological understanding of mercy as it applied to the corporate life of the Christian church at every level. We realized that the Lutheran confessions are replete with references to the corporate life of mercy that we are all supposed to participate in as members of the church. For these reasons then the discussion that I would like to have with Prof. Herrmann takes on an aura of déjà vu.
I believe it is a discussion worth having however especially as it relates to the idea of colonialism or a kind of paternalistic attitude developed by an institution over against those to whom they are doing mercy. Individuals can go there too, but it seems to be a proclivity in organizations.  In my discussions with some folks last night about Prof. Herrmann’s article someone said it sounded way too liberal and 60’s radical to be taken seriously.  One friend of mine asked, “do people actually debate whether we are being patronizing or demeaning when we want to “do mercy” in a crisis for instance?  Has anyone ever actually had that conversation?”  Well yes they have and they do!

Early in our work with LCMS World Relief and Human Care a rather heated debate took place with some good folks that we had patnered with in the past.  The folks on the corporate level of that organization had forbidden the workers on the ground to hand out Gospel tracts, or to “witness” to faith in Christ, after a hurricane .  To do so they said was, “coercive and might lead to mercenary conversions”.  Since that formative event in my life, I have talked to missionaries who are adamant that no mercy work whatsoever be done in the mission field, that codependancy caused by “mercenary conversion is ultimately destructive to all work done in a mission field. 

Right now if I have to take a position of being one who has “the upper hand and thus from that place of luxury” I can “be gracious and merciful to a disadvantaged world” or not being able to talk about Christ in a disaster situation, I’ll take the former. 

By the way, to further the discussion, Pastor Drevlow said that his group “had a great time”.  To say you had a “great time” while doing ‘mercy” in a disaster area adds a certain layer to the nuances of this topic but they need to be aired.

“Mercy” – What’s in a Word?

 

 

 

 

I read with fascination an article in the latest journal from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, my alma mater.  It’s the Fall 2011 volume 137 number 4 issue. The article is by Erik Herrmann and it’s about mercy. On first reading what was going through my mind was “it is possible to think too much”. However upon further review I realize this article raises some questions I’ve had in my own mind over the last few years. If I’m getting Prof. Herrmann’s point, the issue for him is whether or not it is possible for churches as institutions  to relate to others “mercifully”. In other words is the word “mercy” something that only should be applied to God and individual Christians in a narrow context (after all Jesus said, “blessed are the merciful”), and specific instances such as a scenario like the “Good Samaritan”?

Prof. Herrmann writes –

As I said before my first reaction to the article was “it is possible to think too much”.   What difference does it make if we choose “Witness, Service and Life Together”, or instead of service use “compassion”, or leave it as it is?  Prof. Herrmann, after asking “is “mercy” the right word?” goes on to say, “Yes, and no, or maybe, or “why do you want to know”?  My question is “why is he asking”?  What is it here that has gotten into Prof. Herrmann’s craw, and does it make any difference?

Well, words do mean things, and it is always been my contention that part of our problem, especially in the political realm is that we have lost the language.  Case in point; when politicians talk about a tax cut and then run around asking everyone how they are going to “pay” for it.  So if I am getting the point of the article, using the word “mercy” in the context that we see it in the emphasis from the Office of the President of the Synod, can lead to  paternalist and perhaps even colonialist actions.  At least we should spend some serious time talking about what we mean when we use the word and what the context is.  I believe that a discussion of “colonialism” is a very timely one as well.  Right now in areas all around the world, institutions that are affiliated with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod are behaving like colonizers under the guise of “witness” and “mission” and sometimes “mercy”. 

So Prof. Herrmann I apologize for my – “it is possible to think too much” – crack, and it is my desire to use your article as you suggest, as a “springboard for further discussion”.  The whole orientation of Christians to the world around them is in need of discussion.  The articles about Tim Tebowand how radio stations and talk show hosts deal with his Christianity raises the fact that much of the animosity in the culture against Christians and a Christian “witness” is that people do feel that we think that we have something that they don’t have and that we in some way “lord it over them”.  The fact that we do have something that they do not is beside the point.  Let’s have a discussion and I hope others will chime in as well.

All Saints Day – Witness,Mercy, Life Together

 

Yesterday was All Saints Day and I meant to post this blog but didn’t.  I have thinking about the LCMS emphasis of Witness, Mercy and Life Together and trying to tie it into a worship service and I found this blog by Paul McCain.  If you notice the quote is the Apology to the Augsburg Confession and its encouragement ot honor the Saints is Witness – as they strengthen faith, Mercy- as they were examples of the same and Life Together – we imitate them in our vocation as we live with our neighbors and struggle for the sake of Christ.

Here is what Article XXI of the Apology of the Augsburg Confession has to say about the proper manner in which we honor and remember the saints.

Our Confession approves honoring the saints in three ways. The first is thanksgiving. We should thank God because He has shown examples of mercy, because He wishes to save people, and because He has given teachers and other gifts to the Church. These gifts, since they are the greatest, should be amplified. The saints themselves, who have faithfully used these gifts, should be praised just as Christ praises faithful businessmen (Matthew 25:21, 23). The second service is the strengthening of our faith.When we see Peter’s denial forgiven, we also are encouraged to believe all the more that grace truly superabounds over sin (Romans 5:20). The third honor is the imitation, first of faith, then of the other virtues. Everyone should imitate the saints according to his calling. The adversaries do not require these true honors. They argue only about invocation, which, even if it were not dangerous, still is not necessary.
