“You could do worse, you always have!”

This presidential campaign from one perspective is absolutely hilarious.  If you have any sense of humor you have to sit back and laugh.  The so called press is truly apoplectic about Trump and have proven what many of us believe and that is that they are incapable of telling the truth about one of the parties.  The party that said there was no way that the Russians could have hacked emails are now convinced that the Russians are behind their nasty and embarrassing statements made public through WikiLeaks.  No one will admit there is voter fraud or voter intimidation even though there are folks out there on video admitting that they have committed fraud and will continue to do so again.  The comedy gets better when it is revealed that comedian Al Franken was probably elected by voter fraud and he was the deciding vote that made Obamacare the law of the land and now poor Minnesota is trying to make the best of a horrible situation.  Funny stuff coming from a state that is usually so busy trying to tell grocery stores they can’t use plastic bags and drivers bored to death in gridlock that they need to be nice to bicyclists, that the cost of heath care going through the roof because of something called the “Affordable Care Act” is last on a long list of issues.   All this stuff is of course considered off limits because we don’t want to besmirch the “sanctity of the electoral process”.  Now that should make peals of laughter ring through the land, but it gets better.  The hilarity really ensues when the stupid party lectures all of us on the fact that there can’t be voter fraud because Governors are in charge of elections.  Let’s see who are some famous governors?  Bill Clinton, George Wallace, Huey Long, Orville Faubus; right, there can’t be any shinanigans when governors are in charge.  But it gets even better!  A campaign bus dumped it’s full load of toilet contents on the street in a park somewhere and when people complained about it the campaign said that it was an “honest mistake”.  Besides the obvious reaction that this is what the campaigns have been doing to the whole country for a year, there is the less than obvious question of how many “dishonest mistakes” have they made?  But it gets even better.  This from Wikipedia – not WikiLeaks…………………….

The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is an annual white tie fundraiser for Catholic charities supporting needy children, held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on the third Thursday of October. It is organized by the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation in honor of former New York Governor Al Smith, the first Catholic presidential candidate; the dinner is hosted by the Archbishop of New York (currently Cardinal Timothy Dolan.)

 Alfred E. Smith in 1928.

The first dinner was in 1945, the year after Al Smith’s death. It is generally the last event at which the two U.S. presidential candidates share a stage before the election.[1] Apart from presidential candidates, keynote speakers have included Clare Boothe Luce, Bob Hope, Henry Kissinger, Tom Brokaw, Tony Blair, and many other prominent figures in government, business, the media, and entertainment.[2]

Ok you ask, why is this funny?  Because tonight is the dinner.  The candidate whose campaign has been shown to have nothing but contempt for Catholics will be there along with the guy that called her a “nasty women” last night, to which of course there was the collective gasp from the permanently disgruntled.  They are supposed to engage in “good natured sparring” and be funny.  By now we should all be rolling on the floor laughing so hard we can’t breath.  Just imagine this women who has no discernable sense of humor engaged in “good natured sparring” with a man who makes fun of everyone.  This could be the most classic “bit” yet.  Donna Brazile has remarked that the Russians probably doctored or wrote those leaked emails as she exhibited a hilarious mixture of righteous indignation and pure stupidity when she was asked why she leaked a debate question to a debate participant.  So maybe the Russians, well known for their sense of humor can leak a few jokes to Hilary so that she can engage in cute banter.

But it gets even better for me because for whatever kind of synapse overlap, I have been calling the Alfred E. Smith dinner the Alfred E. Neuman dinner (sometimes I just crack myself up.)  I spent valuable time this morning looking up why I might have made this mistake.  What kind of strange thing was going on in my brain that made me get this in my head?  My humor goes to the comedic styling of Dan Cole, the Common Man on KFAN radio out of Minneapolis, (my guess is that he doesn’t find Al Franken funny either although I could be wrong since he is a Minnesotan) and the high brow sophisticated humor of Mad Magazine.  That is where it came from.  Buried deep in my subconscious was the magazines mascot, Alfred E. Neuman running for president with an election placard that read — “You could do worse, you always have!”

Priceless.  Remember that when you cogitate the “sanctity of the electoral process”.

Prayer Shaming in a Culture That Has No Shame.

compare and contrastThere is a debate over so-called “prayer shaming,” which Emma Green of The Atlantic described this way very early in the story: “Anger about the shooting was turned not toward the perpetrator or perpetrators, whose identities are still unknown, but at those who offered their prayers.” She wrote: There’s a clear claim being made here, and one with an edge: Democrats care about doing something and taking action while Republicans waste time offering meaningless prayers. These two reactions, policy-making and praying, are portrayed as mutually exclusive, coming from totally contrasting worldviews.

Obviously that was written a few days ago before they knew who had done what but think about what is being said here.  “Doing something” as I have said before, when said by a politician is a cause for prayer.  God help us when politicians want to do something.  That covers both Democrats and Republicans.

The idea of prayer shaming however is a very serious business.  It shows the divide and the wedge being driven between this culture at all levels, especially in media and politics, and Christians.  The idea of media or politicians mocking prayer would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.  The first amendment is being attacked on every level of this society and actually being given up without a fight on college campuses.  The evidence is strong that neighbors knew something was wrong in California with the Farook’s but they were afraid of saying anything for fear of being called a racist.

There is also a danger that the public actually starts paying attention to when politicians “do something” and when they refuse to “do something”.  Why hasn’t anyone “done something” about the Veterans Administration?  IRS?  Immigration?  We should study what they do as well.  The mess we are in with our health care and insurance is on display because someone in Washington did something.  Hilary’s foray into “Gun Control” was on display in Benghazi.

Christians are being marginalized and many of their views are being labeled extreme.  Much of that comes with help from the so called main-line churches who gave up their Christian witness years ago and have simply become purveyors of “justice”.  “Justice” in this case means political correctness. It is the kind of justice that kept the neighbor in San Bernadino who saw something from saying something.

Be Careful What You Wish For……

nigerian protest

The Sambisa Forest is about the size of West Virginia..  It is the last refuge of the ostrich in Nigeria.  Somewhere in there many believe are 300 kidnapped girls.  On the other side of the African Continent, the Samburu in Kenya is the refuge of the Grevy’s Zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the black rhino.  These places are the refuge of characters that crawl around in our nightmares.  Boko Haram, El Shabab, Ansura,  all of whom take refuge in areas like this and raise havoc.  We heard about Al Shabab kidnapping entire villages a few years ago on a Mary Okeyo trip.  In fact we traveled through a village that seemed to have no residents and when we asked about it a few hours later and further in the mountains a head man told us that it could have been taken by these terrorists.  Boko Haram has been kidnapping and terrorizing for years,  They have been known to burn young boys alive in their schools rather than kidnap them.  We don’t hear about that over here because we have a Federal Government that never declared them to be terrorists because they “didn’t want them to get publicity”.  Interesting what passes for publicity when one becomes a member of and a leader in the Federal Government.  This is the Daily Beasts take on the Federal Government and their reaction.  The “responsible leader” at the time was Hilary Clinton.

What Clinton didn’t mention was that her own State Department refused to place Boko Haram on the list of foreign terrorist organizations in 2011, after the group bombed the U.N. headquarters in Abuja. The refusal came despite the urging of the Justice Department, the FBI, the CIA, and over a dozen senators and congressmen.

“The one thing she could have done, the one tool she had at her disposal, she didn’t use. And nobody can say she wasn’t urged to do it. It’s gross hypocrisy,” said a former senior U.S. official who was involved in the debate. “The FBI, the CIA, and the Justice Department really wanted Boko Haram designated, they wanted the authorities that would provide to go after them, and they voiced that repeatedly to elected officials.”

In May 2012, then-Justice Department official Lisa Monaco (now at the White House) wrote to the State Department to urge Clinton to designate Boko Haram as a terrorist organization. The following month, Gen. Carter Ham, the chief of U.S. Africa Command, said that Boko Haram “are likely sharing funds, training, and explosive materials” with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. And yet, Hillary Clinton’s State Department still declined to place Boko Haram on its official terrorist roster.

Secretary of State John Kerry eventually added Boko Haram and its splinter group Ansaru to the list of foreign terrorist organizations in November 2013, following a spate of church bombings and other acts that demonstrated the group’s escalating abilities to wreak havoc.

‪Being placed on the State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations allows U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies to use certain tools and authorities, including several found in the Patriot Act. The designation makes it illegal for any U.S. entities to do business with the group in question. It cuts off access to the U.S. financial system for the organization and anyone associating with it. And the designation also serves to stigmatize and isolate foreign organizations by encouraging other nations to take similar measures.

The State Department’s refusal to designate Boko Haram as a terrorist organization prevented U.S. law enforcement agencies from fully addressing the growing Boko Haram threat in those crucial two years, multiple GOP lawmakers told The Daily Beast.”

Now that three hundred girls have been kidnapped we might start hearing about the burning alive of little boys and all the other atrocities but my guess is this will dissipate pretty soon when the press starts to realize how ineffective and ridiculous the Federal Government was and continues to be in this whole area.  The news will dry up because we certainly don’t want to hurt anyone’s election chances.  The press today doesn’t want their favorites to get bad publicity.

“Hash tag” to the lady in the picture holding up the sign that says “Federal Government – do something!”   Be careful what you wish for.

Something about elections and politics that makes liars out of some and fools out of others but in the end we all are the fools for trusting and believing these people.

Psalm 146 has been in my mind for the last few days.  I read it a lot but for some reason this week it is really in my head.

146 Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord, O my soul!
While I live I will praise the Lord;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Do not put your trust in princes,
Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.
His spirit departs, he returns to his earth;
In that very day his plans perish.

Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help,
Whose hope is in the Lord his God,
Who made heaven and earth,
The sea, and all that is in them;
Who keeps truth forever,
Who executes justice for the oppressed,
Who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord gives freedom to the prisoners.

The Lord opens the eyes of the blind;
The Lord raises those who are bowed down;
The Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the strangers;
He relieves the fatherless and widow;
But the way of the wicked He turns upside down.

10 The Lord shall reign forever—
Your God, O Zion, to all generations.

Praise the Lord!
